Muco Gingival problems

The tissue at the margin of gums is generally firmly attached and pink in color. This tissue is known as keratinized gingiva. The keratinized gingiva protects the integrity of the gingiva and resists recession and inflammation.

Muco-gingival problems refer to conditions where the amount, quality, or position of the gum tissue (keratinized gingiva) is insufficient to protect the teeth and support oral health. In addition to the lack of keratinized tissue the thickness of gum is also minimal. Combined with these two factors the gum cannot resist brushing pressure or chewing of abrasive food. These problems can include lack of attached gingiva, thin tissue biotype, shallow vestibule, and high frenal attachments that interfere with oral hygiene or lead to recession.

All these problems can be corrected with periodontal plastic surgery at Perio Dental, where we utilize techniques like grafts, flap surgeries, and vestibuloplasty to restore healthy tissue form and function.

Why muco-gingival health matters

Keratinized, firmly attached gum tissue provides a stable barrier against plaque and mechanical forces from brushing and chewing. Without adequate tissue thickness or width, patients may experience recession, increased sensitivity, tooth instability, and higher risk of inflammation. Addressing muco-gingival defects early can prevent future complications and simplify restorative and implant treatment planning.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the specific problem and patient goals. Periodontal plastic surgery techniques commonly used include:

What to expect

Procedures are typically done under local anaesthesia, often using microsurgical techniques for reduced morbidity and improved aesthetics. Post-operative care focuses on infection prevention, gentle oral hygiene instructions, and follow-up to ensure stable tissue healing. With modern materials and techniques, predictable and natural-looking results are achievable.
